Constraints on the correlation between QSO luminosity and host halo mass from high-redshift quasar clustering

چکیده
Recent measurements of high-redshift QSO clustering from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey indicate that QSOs at z ∼ 4 have a bias 〈b〉 ≃ 14. We find that this extremely high clustering amplitude, combined with the corresponding space density, constrains the dispersion in the L−Mh relation to be less than 50% at 99% confidence for the most conservative case of a 100% duty cycle. This upper limit to the intrinsic dispersion provides as strong a constraint as current upper limits to the intrinsic dispersion in the local MBH − σ relation and the ratio of bolometric to Eddington luminosity of luminous QSOs.

Quasar Clustering from Sdss Dr5: Dependences on Physical Properties
Using a homogenous sample of 38,208 quasars with a sky coverage of ∼ 4000deg2 drawn from the SDSS Data Release Five quasar catalog, we study the dependence of quasar clustering on luminosity, virial black hole mass, quasar color, and radio loudness. At z < 2.5, quasar clustering depends weakly on luminosity and virial black hole mass, with typical uncertainty levels ∼ 10% for the measured corre...
متن کاملThe Clustering of Galaxies around Quasars
We study the cross-correlation between quasars and galaxies by embedding models for the formation and evolution of the two populations in cosmological N-body simulations. We adopt the quasar evolution model of Kauffmann & Haehnelt (2000), in which supermassive black holes are formed and fuelled during major mergers. We define the “bias” parameter bQG as the ratio of the cross-correlation functi...
متن کاملModeling the QSO luminosity and spatial clustering at low redshifts
We investigate the ability of hierarchical models of QSO formation and evolution to match the observed luminosity, number counts and spatial clustering of quasars at redshift z < 2. These models assume that the QSO emission is triggered by galaxy mergers, that the mass of the central black hole correlates with halo properties and that quasars shine at their Eddington luminosity except, perhaps,...
متن کاملEvidence for Merger-Driven Activity in the Clustering of High Redshift Quasars
Recently, a very large clustering length has been measured for quasars at a redshift of z ∼ 4. In combination with the observed quasar luminosity function we assess the implications of this clustering for the relationship between quasar luminosity and dark matter halo mass. Our analysis allows for non-linearity and finite scatter in the relation between quasar luminosity and halo mass, as well ...
متن کاملCalibrating the Galaxy Halo – Black Hole Relation Based on the Clustering of Quasars
The observed number counts of quasars may be explained either by long-lived activity within rare massive hosts, or by short-lived activity within smaller, more common hosts. It has been argued that quasar lifetimes may therefore be inferred from their clustering length, which determines the typical mass of the quasar host. Here we point out that the relationship between the mass of the black-ho...
